Getting good sleep affects all aspects of your health. Sleeping well and sleeping enough is a challenge in college, but more important than ever. Being well-rested will help you listen during your lectures, and be at your top performance on tests and assignments. If you have a hard time dragging yourself out of your student housing in Orem in the mornings, you probably aren’t sleeping well enough. Here are a few things you can try:

Darkness

Light messes with your natural circadian rhythm. You will fall asleep easier and stay in a deeper sleep if your room is completely dark. If your UVU college apartment doesn’t have good enough blinds, or if your roommate leaves the night light on, you can try an eye mask. Eye masks simply cover your eyes so that any light doesn’t bother you while trying to sleep.

Quiet

Noise is another thing that can impair the quality of your sleep, and even your ability to fall asleep in the first place. If you’re living in UVU student housing, there’s not always a lot you can do about the noise around you. Try to come to an understanding with your roommates about when quiet time is. If you absolutely can’t find any quiet time for sleep, try ear plugs or a white noise machine.

Get Off Your Phone

Most of us wind down to go to bed using our phones, but this can negatively impact your sleep. Actively using your phone can keep your brain engaged and awake, making it harder for you to fall asleep. Our phones also emit blue light that keeps us from producing melatonin and going to sleep. So tonight put your phone on your nightstand in your UVU apartment, and let yourself relax and fall asleep.

Blue Light Glasses

If you really can’t stay away from your devices, try wearing blue light glasses. Blue light glasses will filter out the blue light emitted from your device, and block the signals it sends to your brain.

If you’re falling asleep in all your classes, it’s time to prioritize getting better sleep. There are plenty of small adjustments you can make to your student apartment near UVU to help you sleep better. You can also make some small adjustments in your routine that will greatly improve your sleep quality. Try out some of these tips tonight!
